Tao Te Ching

The Art and The Journey

Translated & Illustrated by Holly Harlayne Roberts

Within the quiet passages of the Tao Te Ching, written by Lao Tzu approximately 2,500 BCE, lie numerous deeply meaningful messages. As keeper of the royal archives, Lao Tzu sensed that humankind had embarked upon a misguided path. Disheartened, he left society, passed through the gates of his city, handed the passages of the Tao Te Ching with the city gate keeper, and left—never to be seen again.

Lao Tzu tells of an infinite, perpetually recycling flow of creation. This flow encompasses all that has ever been, all that is, and all that will ever be. He calls this flow “The Tao.” The Tao is neither a supernatural force, nor a God. It is simply, “The Way things are.” One who truly understands this flow will abandon all pride and will appreciate one’s brief moment of existence within the perpetual, infinite flow of the Tao.

This gracefully illustrated version of the Tao Te Ching conveys the gentle, humble wisdom of the Tao.
